Rainbow Mountains of China: Zhangye Danxia Geological Park

There are several hiking trails that let you get closer to the formations and see the details up close. Dont miss the Danxia landforms that look like waves frozen in stone. The surrounding area also has some traditional Chinese villages and temples that add cultural interest to the trip. From the observation platforms you can see the full scale of the park which stretches for many kilometers. Its impressive how nature created such a palette over millions of years.

When to Go
The best time is from May to October when the weather is warmer and the skies are clearer. Summer months can get hot but the colors look brightest under direct sunlight. I went in late September and it was comfortable with beautiful light in the afternoons. Winter brings snow which can make the landscape look different but many paths may be closed.

How to Get There
Most visitors fly into Zhangye city airport or take a high speed train from bigger cities like Lanzhou or Xi'an. From Zhangye it is about a one hour drive to the geological park. You can hire a taxi or join a small day tour which is quite convenient. The roads are good so getting there is not too complicated.

Where to Stay
Zhangye city has a good selection of modern hotels and some budget guesthouses. There are also a few hotels and resorts closer to the park entrance that offer nice views of the surrounding mountains. Staying in the city is usually more comfortable and gives you access to more restaurants and shops in the evening.

Travel Tips
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip because some viewpoints involve stairs and short walks. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen as the sun can be strong in this region. Try the local noodles and lamb dishes in Zhangye, they are tasty and filling after a day outdoors. Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the strongest sun and get better photos. Respect the rules of the park and stay on the designated paths.
