Pico Island has the highest mountain in Portugal and endless vineyards planted in black volcanic soil. Dont miss the dramatic cliffs and waterfalls on Flores Island, often called the most beautiful of them all. Sao Jorge offers incredible hiking along the Faja dos Vimes, while Terceira has colorful historic towns and underground lava tubes you can explore. There are also whale watching tours, black sand beaches and many hidden natural pools formed by volcanic rock.

When to Go
The weather is mild almost all year but the best time for visiting is from May to September when its warmer and drier. June to August is peak season but even then its never too crowded. I visited in late spring and the flowers were everywhere making the landscapes even more beautiful. Winters are wetter and windier but can be nice if you dont mind the rain and want lower prices.

How to Get There
You can fly to Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel from Lisbon or Porto, there are regular flights. From there you can take short domestic flights or ferries to reach the other islands. Renting a car on each island is highly recommended because public transport is limited and the best spots are often in remote areas.

Where to Stay
On Sao Miguel there are nice guesthouses and small hotels in Ponta Delgada as well as cozy places near the lakes. Many farms offer rural tourism stays where you get to experience local life. On smaller islands look for family run accommodations or simple but comfortable hotels with great ocean views. Some places even have houses with private thermal pools which is a real treat.

Travel Tips
Pack layers because the weather can change quickly especially in the mountains. Bring good hiking shoes as many trails are steep and muddy after rain. Try the local cheeses and fresh seafood, they are excellent. If you plan to hike always check the weather forecast first. Renting a car gives you much more freedom but be careful with narrow roads and strong winds on cliffs. The Azoreans are friendly and helpful so dont hesitate to ask for recommendations when you arrive.
