São Tomé and Príncipe: Africa’s Best-Kept Island Paradise

The beaches like Praia Piscina and Praia Grande are stunning with clear water and soft sand. Dont miss the old cocoa plantations and roças, many of them are still working and offer tours. Príncipe is even more untouched with beautiful bays like Bom Bom and incredible snorkeling spots. Climb to Pico de Príncipe for amazing views or explore the tiny capital Santo António with its colorful colonial buildings. There are also whale watching opportunities, forest hikes and beautiful sunsets over the ocean almost every day.

When to Go
The dry season from June to September is the best time with less rain and calmer seas. December to February is also good but can be a bit more humid. I visited in July and found it pleasant, though short showers can happen anytime which actually keeps everything so green and fresh.

How to Get There
You usually fly into São Tomé International Airport from Lisbon or via connections through Angola or Gabon. From São Tomé there are short flights or a ferry to Príncipe Island. Once on the islands renting a car or hiring a driver is recommended because roads can be rough and many beautiful spots are off the main routes.

Where to Stay
On São Tomé you can choose from small hotels in the capital or beautiful eco lodges and converted plantation houses outside the city. Príncipe has fewer options but they are special, like luxury tented camps or charming guesthouses right by the beach. Many places focus on sustainable tourism and offer a more personal and authentic stay.

Travel Tips
Bring insect repellent because its a tropical area with mosquitoes. Pack light clothing and good walking shoes for forest hikes. Try the local chocolate and fresh seafood, they are highlights of the trip. Be respectful when visiting local communities and always ask before taking photos.
